Great Lakes Undergraduate Internship

The Great Lakes Undergraduate Internship program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to help address issues affecting coastal communities through social and environmental conservation sciences. Through this program, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant’s (IISG) interns will gain knowledge and skills to support Lake Michigan coastal communities in making more informed decisions about resource management and everyday activities. These paid internships may include research, communication, or outreach activities. Applicants may also have an opportunity to participate in activities (for example, attend a professional conference) in addition to their specific internship duties.
As part of this program, IISG includes required professional development training that takes place, on average, for one hour per week, or approximately eight hours altogether. (One or more of these opportunities may take more than one hour, so in some weeks, no activities will be offered.)

Aquatic Invasive Species Outreach
Mentor/Supervisor Name: Katie O’Reilly
Description: Education and outreach are critical to preventing the spread of harmful aquatic invasive species (AIS) in the Great Lakes. Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) has developed AIS education and outreach resources for nearly 30 years. To effectively get these materials into the hands of people that need them, we often need to be creative – sometimes by partnering with organizations who have established relationships with different audiences. One such group is the University of Illinois Extension program, whose extension agents are trained in communicating research with members of their communities and often have expertise in a variety of different areas. However, agents may not have specific expertise or information about AIS prevention and management. To help extension agents be better prepared for questions from their communities about AIS, IISG’s AIS Team is looking for an intern to develop and conduct a needs assessment to understand the types of information and resources that would help extension agents better address these topics.
During this internship, the intern will:
- Use social science sampling techniques (e.g., structured interviews, surveys, focus groups) to assess UI Extension Agents’ need for aquatic invasive species (AIS) outreach resources.
- Use results from this assessment to inform IISG’s dissemination of current outreach materials and development of new materials.
- Help create new and creative AIS outreach materials.
The successful applicant will be an employee of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience or interest in learning about social science research techniques and data collection.
- Interest in science communication.
- Interest in learning about extension as a career option.
