Southern Lake Michigan Water Safety
Lake Michigan offers exceptional opportunities for recreation and relaxation along its shoreline. However, the southern portion of the lake experiences the highest rate of drownings across the Great Lakes. Rapidly changing wind and wave conditions, an uneven lakebed, and hazardous currents can pose serious risks—even to experienced swimmers, boaters, and anglers.
To help keep beachgoers informed, visit the Lake Michigan Safety site, where you’ll find a wealth of water safety information and resources, including:
- Swimmer, boating, and fishing safety guidelines
- Current beach advisories
- Beach safety signs and posters
- Water safety brochures, flyers, and rack cards
- Fact sheets and digital publications
- Free water safety knowledge assessment
- Information on Lake Michigan buoys
Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant established the Southern Lake Michigan Water Safety Task Force—a collaborative effort among federal, state, and local governments, along with engaged community members—dedicated to promoting the safe use of Lake Michigan’s waters. Together, these partners are working to share expertise, pool resources, and deliver effective public education on water safety.
