Great Lakes Aquaculture Collaborative
GLAC was established in 2019 to serve as a hub for fully integrated, transdisciplinary research, outreach, and education that will provide broad, non-proprietary support and investment for enhancing a land-based aquaculture industry in the Great Lakes Region. Phase I of the project, GLAC 1.0, created a region-wide group to foster relevant, science-based initiatives that supported aquaculture industries in the Great Lakes region through economic and marketing research and associated outreach programming to increase the profitability and environmental sustainability of aquaculture businesses.
Phase II of the project, GLAC 2.0, focused on increasing aquaculture literacy, strengthening the GLAC network, and working with aquaculture producers to continue developing an environmentally responsible, competitive, and sustainable aquaculture industry in the Great Lakes region that benefits communities. In Phase III, GLAC 3.0, the project is working to provide aquaculture literacy for consumers, K-12 educators and youth, and policy makers.
It is important to GLAC that land-based aquaculture production in the Great Lakes is:
- Environmentally responsible
- Competitive
- Sustainable
