It’s been a few months since IISG-sponsored graduate students Sara Paver and Katherine Touzinsky began their Knauss fellowships. We were curious to hear about their experiences so far and thought you might be too. We heard from Sara a few weeks ago. This week we check-in with Katherine, an alum of Purdue University who is spending the year with the US Army Corps of Engineers.
“This year has been overwhelming, in a good way. I never thought I would find myself working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. That being said, I also can’t imagine a better fit for my Knauss Fellowship. I went to Purdue University as a fellow in the Ecological Sciences and Engineering (ESE) interdisciplinary program because, as an ecologist, I thought it would be valuable to gain insight into the way engineers and other scientists think. In addition to the courses and thesis work I completed in the Forestry Department at Purdue, the supplementary education I received through ESE was eye opening and fascinating. I loved the practice of big-picture thinking, and this year with the Corps has solidified that love. It has prompted intellectual growth and self-realization. I’m moving on from studying human-ecological invasive species interaction to thinking about nationwide systems like marine transportation, flood risk management, and how to prepare for an uncertain future.
Living in Washington, D.C. has been an amazing experience in itself. Not only is my job exciting, but I moved out to D.C. with 50 other Knauss fellows—a built-in network of brilliant and ambitious people who have a true passion for the environment and for communicating science to those outside of academia. It has been so exciting and valuable to get to know the other fellows because I know they are people who will stay in my network the rest of my life. When else do you get to move to a new city with 50 new friends to explore it with?
In the past six months, I have spent a total of 11 weeks on the road—touring parts of our nation’s largest engineering projects that the public never sees, working on introducing new technologies to district projects, helping to facilitate workshops and conferences with environmentalists, regulatory personnel, and project directors from around the world, and learning about the staggering amount of resources and manpower involved in managing our waterway systems.
I am currently writing this post in a coffee shop outside of Portland, Oregon (yes, the coffee is great). I spent the past two days touring both the Bonneville Dam and The Dalles on the Columbia River with five engineers from the Engineering Research and Development Center. We worked with the dam operators on addressing some research and development (R&D) solutions to issues they have at their project sites—from fish ladders, to corrosion, to wear and tear from boats and barges coming in and out of the navigation locks. R&D can address all of these problems, and big-picture thinking while planning R&D projects is the key to a sustainable future. The Portland District projects were breathtaking—two of the largest power generating dams in the country.
August and September will bring trips to district projects in California and Hawaii and conferences in the Netherlands and Greece. I’m looking forward to what the next six months will bring. I truly can’t imagine a more exciting year.”

It’s been a few months since IISG-sponsored graduate students Sara Paver and Katherine Touzinsky began their Knauss fellowships. We were curious to hear about their experiences so far and thought you might be too. First up is Sara, an alum of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who is spending the year at the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences.
“I have officially reached the halfway point in my fellowship. I am having a wonderful experience, and the time has passed unbelievably quickly. I would consider the best aspects of being a Knauss Fellow to be (in no particular order) the abundance and breadth of opportunities—no two fellowship experiences are the same, and there is quite a bit of flexibility to tailor your experiences to your interests—and the awesome people you have the opportunity to interact with along the way. I really enjoy working with my colleagues at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and spending time with the other fellows.
My fellowship placement is in the Division of Ocean Sciences, where I have been working to facilitate the review of grant proposals submitted to the Coastal Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (Coastal SEES) program and the Biological Oceanography core program. I submitted a few grants to NSF as a graduate student, and it has been very illuminating to see the grant review process from the other side. I especially enjoy meeting and interacting with the scientists who serve on panels.
My position at NSF has also enabled me to improve my science communication skills. I revised the 2014 Coastal SEES award abstracts to make them accessible to a non-specialist audience. I have also been writing NSF Highlights to describe the broader impacts of research accomplishments funded by the NSF Biological Oceanography program.
Outside of my work at NSF, I have been using my non-stipend fellowship funds to travel. I recently returned from Waterville Valley, NH, where I attended my first Gordon Research Conference. The theme of the conference was “Ocean Global Change Biology: Interactive Effects of Multiple Global Change Variables.” In May, I had the opportunity to travel to the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay, ME to participate in an Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry scoping workshop focused on improving predictive biogeochemical models through single cell-based analyses of marine plankton. These experiences provided me with opportunities to network with researchers—including scientists whose work I cited in my dissertation and had specifically hoped to meet—as well as the chance to watch collaborations form and new research areas emerge.
The Knauss Fellowship has also provided me with unique extra-curricular experiences. For example, I recently viewed Saturn through a telescope at the Naval Observatory during a special tour for Knauss Fellows set up by Justine Kimball, the fellow currently serving as policy liaison to the Oceanographer of the Navy. Earlier in the year, I went bowling with my NSF colleagues at the Truman Bowling Alley in the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is near the White House. I also went on a road trip with some of the other Knauss Fellows, including IISG fellow Katherine Touzinsky, to Horn Point Laboratory on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where we completed an Integration and ApplicationNetwork (IAN) science communication course.
I am excited to see what is in store for me in the next six months and would encourage anyone interested in the intersection of science and policy to seriously consider applying to be a Knauss Fellow.”

It’s been two years since we launched our summer internship program, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Our interns did great things at IISG—educated boaters on AIS prevention, investigated community perceptions of sediment remediation projects, installed a real-time buoy in Lake Michigan, and more. But this impressive work didn’t stop at the end of the summer. Several are now in graduate programs, including law school. Some moved on to internships focused on Great Lakes monitoring and renewable engineering. And a few have even stayed at IISG.
To celebrate the program’s two-year anniversary, we go back to where it all began with a four-part series showcasing our first round of interns—what they did and where they are now. The series wraps up with Naoki Wada.
What did you work on while interning with IISG?
During my internship, I led a project that resulted in the first-ever nearshore real-time weather observation buoy in Indiana’s Lake Michigan waters. Data from the Michigan City buoy is used for research, educational, and weather alert purposes. I was responsible for configuring, testing, deploying, operating, and recovering the buoy in 2012. I also developed a user manual to ensure proper buoy operations in the future.
What did you like most about your internship?
I was responsible for the whole project—from configuration of the internal system and construction of the mooring structure to deployment and later retrieval in preparation for winter storage. It was a great learning experience with a lot of trial and error. I learned how to manage a project and gained knowledge of various technical features and techniques. The experience also taught me that it’s ‘ok’ that I don’t know everything. There are always ways to figure it out. Also, I liked that the effort was not for the sake of learning, like in school, but to help someone and society.
What are you doing now?
I am a graduate student in mechanical and ocean engineering at University of California at Berkeley. My primary interest is the development of offshore floating wind power, for which the experiences and knowledge gained as an IISG intern has proven highly useful. This summer, I am also interning as a renewable energy consultant at an engineering service company in San Francisco called Black & Veatch. My main task is to conduct production estimates for large-scale solar power plants to verify the feasibility of the proposed projects.
As you can tell, I am very interested in engineering and renewable energy. I am interested in both the technical and non-technical aspects of these fields and am trying to find the way I can best contribute to the worldwide effort to develop renewable energy.
How did your time with IISG help prepare you for your graduate program and internship?
The experiences I had as an IISG intern is obviously highly relevant to what I am studying in graduate school. Through the internship, I learned how difficult it was to develop and deploy a small observation buoy and what kind of tasks and processes were involved. Because these same processes generally apply to other floating structures, including offshore floating wind platforms, I know I will use the knowledge I gained at IISG throughout my graduate program.
Also, the project management skills I learned will be useful as I move into industry. It is similar in that there will be a product or deliverable that has to be created on a limited budget and time frame. Knowing how to plan ahead is always important because things can definitely go wrong unexpectedly.
What advice would you have for future IISG interns or those considering applying?
One experience and summer can lead to bigger opportunities in many ways. Even if you’re not 100 percent sure what you will do in the future, just go for it if it’s the type of thing that you might like. Commit to the opportunities in front of you and the path will follow.

What did you work on while interning with IISG?
During my IISG internship, I worked with Paris Collngsworth on a study comparing zooplankton and nutrient data collected by the Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) with data collected by the Interagency Lower Trophic Level Monitoring Program of the Lake Erie Committee Forage Task Group (LEC-FTG). We used a mathematical model to calculate the similarities in zooplankton communities across time and locations. This study will help improve monitoring efforts by determining whether the LEC-FTG survey is capturing characteristics that the GLNPO data is not.
What did you like most about your internship, and why?
My favorite part of my internship was collecting nutrient and biological samples aboard the EPA R/V Lake Guardian. This allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the field and collect the zooplankton species that I was looking at in my data study.
What are you doing now?
I am currently interning with the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE) at GLNPO. My work there is focused on Great Lakes projects, such as formatting web releases for the International Association for Great Lakes Research website, working with USGS on uploading GLNPO monitoring sites to the Science of the Great Lakes (SiGL) Mapper database, and formatting the website for the IISG Limno Loan program. Additionally, I am still doing work on the R/V Lake Guardian.
How did your time with IISG help prepare you for your ORISE internship?
The internship really helped me meet people in the different areas of the Great Lakes and expand my contacts in the industry. I met the people I work with now while at IISG, actually. Additionally, the internship allowed me to learn about various aspects of Great Lakes ecosystems, and I apply this knowledge daily in my current position.
What advice would you have for future IISG interns or those considering applying?
My advice would be to definitely apply for the internship! It is a great way to make contacts in the environmental industry. There are tons of networking opportunities. Additionally, the IISG internship is a great way to experience environmental work underway in the Great Lakes basin and to see all of the career opportunities available.

What did you work on while interning with IISG?
I worked with Margaret Schneemann on water issues in Chicago and northeastern Illinois. I mainly worked on research and text for an outdoor water conservation guidebook aimed at stakeholders in northern Illinois. The guidebook explains the need for outdoor water conservation and outlines ecological, economic, and legislative strategies to promote conservation. I also helped a little bit with the Lawn to Lake program, which encourages the use of natural and organic fertilizers and gardening practices that reduce nutrient runoff into Lake Michigan.
What did you like most about your internship?
The work I did during my internship with IISG was very interdisciplinary, so I never got bored—if I had had enough of turf science for the day, I could always switch to reading about lawn watering ordinances. I also got to explore the benefits of and connections between different aspects of water conservation that I might never have considered otherwise.
What are you doing now? If you are in school, what are you studying? If you are working, who with and doing what?
I am working towards my J.D. at New York University School of Law. I’ll be a second year in the fall and plan to pursue a career in environmental law once I graduate. I’m back in Chicago for the summer, doing a legal internship at the Environmental Law & Policy Center. My work here ranges from researching questions that might be raised in a permit appeal to writing memos on broad legal issues to helping attorneys prepare for oral arguments. Through this internship, I have learned more about the environmental implications of zoning and nuisance law, the regulatory framework created by the Clean Water Act, and new approaches to reducing pollution, such as water quality credit trading. And I’m looking forward to learning much more as the summer continues!
How did your time with IISG help prepare you for law school?
Working with Sea Grant was a unique experience because I got to explore environmental issues –particularly water issues—from several different angles. I think the main takeaway I got from this internship is that environmental issues tend to exist on the intersection of science, economics, behavioral psychology, and law. The projects I worked on with Margaret inspired me to do a senior thesis on urban water management in developing countries, in which my goal was to examine the relative success of the strategies used by six water utilities to meet their constituents’ needs. These strategies incorporated both law and economics, and they varied in response to different water resource conditions, so the skills I learned while working with IISG came in handy.
In general, I’ve tried to apply this mindset to my education as much as possible. I learned that being an effective advocate for the environment requires a certain level of versatility. During college, I supplemented my environmental science degree with minors in psychology and economics. In law school, I plan on taking classes like Corporations, Tax, and International Law in addition to environmental law courses so that I can better understand how the pieces of the global-environmental-puzzle fit together.
What advice would you have for future IISG interns or those considering applying?
Do it! IISG internships are a great opportunity to not only expand your knowledge of environmental issues in the Midwest but also to develop essential skills like researching and writing for a variety of audiences. You get to work with and learn from highly qualified folks in really cool settings—whether you’re in downtown Chicago or on a boat on one of the Great Lakes.

What did you work on while interning with IISG?
I worked with the aquatic invasive species (AIS) team at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. I designed and conducted a survey to help investigate the prevalence of AIS preventative behaviors among boaters and anglers, a key demographic in the effort to prevent the spread of AIS. By the end of the summer, I formulated a formal research report and academic poster presentation based on the final results of my survey. All efforts in the research and poster presentation were done in collaboration with my internship supervisor and co-author, Sarah Zack. In September 2012, I presented my research at the Illinois Water Conference at the University of Illinois and received a student scholarship and honorable mention award. Among the 30 registered students in the poster competition, I was one of two to receive a conference award and the only undergraduate to receive any mention.
What did you like most about your internship?
My summer internship marked the beginning of my environmental science and research career. There are many different aspects of the internship that really made it a memorable and influential experience. Working one-on-one with the AIS team, I took part in their mission and service to communities in Illinois and Indiana. Throughout the summer, I was able to contribute to the rebranding of their outreach program, IISG staff meetings and webinars, and educational presentations at the Environmental Protection Agency, Brookfield Zoo, Cook County Forest Preserves, and Chicago Botanic Gardens. I was also able to formulate and conduct my own research design, survey collection, data analysis, and scientific presentation. I really enjoyed having central ownership on my project and learned so much about independent scientific research. Lastly, the experience allowed me to give back to the community. Over the summer, I met and talked to over 650 people about AIS and the actions they could take to stop their spread into the Great Lakes. I gained valuable experience on communicating complex environmental issues to local communities.
What are you doing now?
This June, I started graduate school at the University of Notre Dame, where I am working towards an M.S. in biology. Through a fully funded research assistantship, I am working in Dr. Jessica Hellmann’s Global Change Ecology Lab. My thesis project is on the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly’s response to climate change and natural resource management at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
How did your time with IISG help prepare you for your graduate work?
Through the IISG summer internship program, I was able to gain firsthand experience with research and environmental problem solving. Not only did my project prepare me for internships and research throughout the rest of my undergraduate career, it will also give me perspective on my next independent research opportunity in graduate school at Notre Dame. Working with the incredibly hard-working people at IISG, I learned a lot about working as a team towards a common goal or set of objectives. This skillset will help immensely in my work with other graduate students, lab technicians, and undergraduates in my new research position with Dr. Hellmann.
What advice would you have for future IISG interns or those considering applying?
I believe working with IISG can open doors to your future professional careers in research, natural resources, or environmental science. I was immersed in an atmosphere of beneficial networking and active learning that has greatly prepared me for proceeding job opportunities and graduate school. For those admitted into the internship program, I encourage you to invest your summer in the project, environmental issue, and co-workers around you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and try to become an expert. Also, throughout the internship, begin to think and ask yourself if this work or field of study is something you would want to make into a career for yourself. By doing these things, you will surely find professional, scholarly, and personal success through the IISG internship program.

Najwa Obeid’s experiences as a Knauss Fellow at the National Science Foundation can perhaps most accurately be described as diverse. And that diversity, she said, will go a long way in helping her achieve her goal of working on water and coastal policy.
Her greatest exposure to policy came while participating in an ecosystem-based management working group with representatives from agencies like the Department of the Interior, NOAA, the U.S. Navy and EPA. Ecosystem-based management is a type of resource management that focuses on whole ecosystems instead of individual species or resources and is one of nine policy recommendations included in the National Ocean Policy Implementation Plan. The group – officially known as the National Ocean Council ecosystem-based management interagency subgroup – was charged with determining what this recommendation meant for each agency and identifying work priorities and pilot projects. In her role with the National Science Foundation, Najwa identified science and knowledge gaps and connected the group with academic experts.
“I have a better idea now of how things do and should work, particularly when there are a lot of agencies involved,” said Najwa, a Ph.D. candidate at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “Reading about the work is one thing, but being immersed in it adds much more value.”
And, like her co-fellow Will Tyburczy, Najwa has some advice for those considering a Knauss fellowship.
“If you have any sort of interest in policy or want to be involved with work that has a faster and more direct social impact,” she advised, “give it a try. It is a very unique and educational year.”

Will Tyburczy’s Knauss fellowship may be over, but his time at NOAA headquarters is not. The IISG-funded fellow will stay with the Office of Program Planning and Integration for another six months to continue some of the work he began as a Knauss Fellow. A Ph.D. candidate at University of Chicago, Will spent the bulk of the last year helping NOAA’s Regional Collaboration Network coordinate the work of NOAA’s five main offices—Weather Service, Fisheries Service, Satellite and Information Service, Ocean Service, and Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. The efforts of these offices often overlap on major issues like climate change, habitat conservation, and emergency response. It was Will’s job, along with the other network members, to find opportunities for collaboration and help NOAA make progress on these issues. He also served as a liaison between NOAA regional staff and organization leaders, ensuring that each group had the information and resources they need to effectively meet program goals.
“It was challenging at times,” said Will. “Sometimes it feels like people are talking past each other and you just aren’t making progress. But we have great people who share a lot of the same goals. It is very satisfying to help them work together to meet those goals.”
But one of the highlights of the fellowship involved a very different kind of coordination. Will organized the fall edition of Earth Science Monitor, a bi-annual publication that reports on NOAA environmental data and programs. He worked closely with representatives from the network’s eight regions to develop articles showing what NOAA is doing to address environmental issues in each region. He also worked with NOAA head Jane Lubchenco on the lead article.
Even after he leaves NOAA, Will hopes to continue working at the nexus of science and policy, translating scientific findings into actionable policy advice. And he has advice for others who think they might be interested in doing similar work: “Apply for the Knauss fellowship. It is a great program.”

Two student applicants sponsored by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant were selected as Knauss fellowship winners this year, and last month they traveled to the nation’s capital to find their respective positions working on water resource and environmental issues.
Katherine Touzinsky and Sara Paver both wrote in to update us on the positions they selected and the specific areas where they will be focusing their energies.
“Placement week – what to say?” Katherine writes. “Over the course of three days, I had 17 interviews for different positions, and each and every one seemed like something I had dreamed up. It was one of the most stressful and exciting experiences I’ve ever had.
I was placed as a navigation R&D advisor for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The US Army Corps of Engineers provides vital public engineering services in peace and war to strengthen our nation’s security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters. I get to take a leadership role in research and development by helping to manage a national R&D agenda, make decisions about technical approaches, and integrate technical teams from federal, academic, and industry sectors. And I’ll get to actively participate in actual research projects too. For at least one week each month, I will be traveling to national DoD labs to meet scientists, get to know their research, and work to make connections between them and other governmental and non-governmental sectors.
I’m in the second year of my master’s program in ecological sciences and engineering (ESE). My thesis work is on the plasticity of Asian carp between the Illinois and Wabash Rivers, and I’ve been lucky enough to work closely with bowfisherman through most of my Asian sampling and extension activities. Right now I’m trying to choose whether or not I will continue on for my PhD and if so, on what topic. I’ve gained some crucial insight on my interests through working with ESE – what I love about ecology is studying interactions and, more broadly, systems. I’m so excited about the Knauss Fellowship year because it is going to let me get a bird’s eye view of the intersections between high-level government, scientists and researchers, the ecology of specific areas, and end users (fisherman, recreationalists, commercial operators, etc.).”
Sara also found placement week to be quite the experience. “Knauss placement week was a fun, speed-dating-esque marathon. It provided an amazing opportunity to get a glimpse of the breadth of work being done within NOAA and other host agencies. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with representatives from various host offices as well as incoming, current, and former fellows.
I selected a position at the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences. Part of my responsibilities will be to facilitate peer review and award decisions for proposals submitted to the Ocean Section, including the Coastal Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability (Coastal SEES) program. I am really excited to be exposed to cutting-edge research and to see the grant review process first hand. I think that reading and participating in the review of the Coastal SEES proposals will be particularly enlightening due to their interdisciplinary nature.
I am graduating in December with a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, having studied aquatic microbial ecology in Dr. Angela Kent’s lab. I am looking forward to broadening my understanding of how policy and the needs of society influence science and how science, in turn, informs policy. I plan to return to microbial ecology research armed with this knowledge following my year as a fellow.”
