A Great Lakes Area of Concern, the St. Louis River bordering Minnesota and Wisconsin has undergone a cleanup through the Great Lakes Legacy Act. As a result, the city of Duluth has seen environmental, economic, and quality of life benefits.

Indiana’s aquaculture industry ranges from small-scale producers growing fish in their back yards to large-scale producers growing fish to sell in national and international markets and includes the production of ornamental fish, fish for human consumption (food fish), and recreational fish that are stocked in private and public ponds and lakes. The types of fish produced include yellow perch, tilapia, baitfish, hybrid striped bass, marine shrimp, freshwater prawns, ornamentals, and trophy fish. 

Ecosystem Services Valuation in the Indiana Coastal Zone introduces this concept to coastal zone managers, policymakers, and valuation practitioners. Ecosystem services valuation allows decision makers to better address resource management challenges and communicate how actions can negatively or positively affect the public.

In Indiana, community leaders make decisions about public spaces such as parks, trails, farmers markets, schools, and Main Streets every day that affect the health and wellness of the community. Using Purdue Extension’s Enhancing the Value of Public Spaces: Creating Healthy Communities program, facilitators coach communities through development of a high quality action plan for their public spaces. The plan can guide decisions and better position communities to take advantage of opportunities to promote healthy eating and active living. Our Indiana-based curriculum is designed for use by decision-makers and local leaders who have oversight and management of community public spaces, such as: Parks boards and planning commission members, Public officials and their staffs, Members of organizations whose missions relate to services, programs, or management of public spaces.

This overview introduces a novel method for producing high-quality protein for larval fish diets, targeting feed and ingredient manufacturers. It outlines the challenges of indoor fish rearing using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), particularly the difficulty larvae have digesting traditional dry feeds. The proposed solution uses protein hydrolysates—pre-digested proteins made more accessible through hydrolysis with species-specific digestive enzymes. This approach improves nutrient absorption and growth performance. Notably, the method uses invasive fish species as a sustainable protein source and applies enzymes from the target species for precise, efficient hydrolysis.
